What Were Your Favorite Summer Reads?

By Julie Daines

The kids are back in school and summer has come to an end. Time for homework, writing, and all that responsible grown-up stuff. I'll miss having all the extra reading time.

Some of my summer reads this year:

Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier (Not a children's or YA book, but I loved it.)

The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey (Also not YA but a lovely retelling of the snow child fairy tale.)

Heart's Blood by Juliet Marillier (Not YA. This is my third time through on this book. If you like Irish-based fantasy, Juliet Marillier is amazing.)

I didn't read much in the children's, MG, and YA category this summer. I usually try to read a lot of YA because that's what I write, but I felt a need for some mature reading.

What did you read this summer that you loved?

My favorites after Memorial Day were:

Driftless, by David Rhodes

Written in Stone: Evolution, the Fossil Record, and Our Place in Nature, by Brian Switek (Excellent science writing, as much a history of paleontology as about the science)

The Witch of Blackbird Pond, by Elizabeth George Speare (MG classic that had somehow escaped my attention)

East of Eden, by John Steinbeck (a re-read, but an excellent one)

Small Gods, by Terry Pratchett (Always a fun author)

The Praise of Folly, by Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus (Not quite light summer reading, but one of the foundational writings of the Renaissance, and surprisingly timely.)

The only thing I read that I really like was The Midwife, most of my reading this summer was to my kids. I'm reading Harry Potter to them for the first time, which is always awesome.
I read them a silly book about Spyro the Dragon from the Skylander's Universe. I was really surprised, it was actually well written and interesting! It said it was written by a penguin (what's that called - shadow writing, ghost writing, something?).

I read so much this summer! I love The Midwife, Liz :-)

this summer I discovered the wonderful writing of Katherine Paterson and Gary Schmidt, seriously good writing!

I read My Sister Lives on the Mantelpiece, which broke my heart and then put it together again. I read an adult book, Painted Hands, about muslim women in the US.
I read Shooting Kabul, about a family who escapes Kabul and in the struggle to leave, their little 6 year old gets left behind. Her brother fights to find her, from the USA.
I read a lot in Spanish too, mainly the YA books I loved as a kid. In fact, I found a collection by a Brazilian author that I loved and I'm anxiously awaiting for it to arrive. I guess I'll be super busy re-awakening my inner child.
You know Daughter of the Forest is one of my all time favorites, right up there with Shadow of the Wind :-)
I also have The Snow Child on my TBR pile.

Scott, I read The Witch with my book group a couple of years ago and really liked it. Talking about classics, I'm reading The Yearling. It won the Pulitzer back in the 30's I guess. Lovely story!
