The Hobbit was published on September 21, 1937, changing fantasy stories forever.

Just don't get off on fantasy or sci/fi either for that matter. I prefer realism.

Paul, people like what they like, so not liking something others worship doesn't make you a bore. Heck, I don't like Sinatra's voice (although I enjoy that style from some of his contemporaries), and probably take as much ribbing for that as you for not reading Tolkien.

I'm not big on sci-fi either, in books or movies, except for 50s B-movies. That said, Tolkien (at his best) is to fantasy as Bradbury (at his best) is to sci-fi. They can be read as literature, not as typical genre escapist stories (not that there's anything wrong with those, either, on occasion).

Still, if it's not your thing spend the time reading something you like or benefit from. There are soooo many books to read.
